Mountain Biking Coleman Lake Yellow Trail

****   Add a review
#6 of 97 mountain bike trails in Alabama
#836 in the world

This is a multi-use trail. Technically listed as horse trails but mountain biking has a growing presense in the trails there. Be considerate to the horses and yeild right of way to them. There are 4 trails there known to me, the Red, Blue, White and Yellow trail. Sweet flowy singletrack with good climbs that reward you with smooth flowy downhill sections. Easy to follow the trails with yellow horseshoes marking the way, and a fun place to explore the beautiful scenery of the Talladega National Forrest.

    Yellow trail review....
Back into Mountain bikes after 20 years. The 12 yr old son got a new on for Christmas. This was our first long trail together. AWESOME!! From the parking/campground we crossed the road, riding counterclockwise on the trail map...The yellow trail is fast and smooth down a long flowing hill at first (I knew we'd pay for it soon enough.). After a push up to the top the yellow and red split. Yellow stays left..so did we. It's a nice ride along the ridge then off the right side down a very rough section, narrow hillside cutout, across a bridge then through the woods. This trail rocks! The downs are just perfect to build speed and pedal fast to make the climbs. There are prolly 10 or so trees down today. (I didn't carry my chainsaw on the bike..sorry).
We had a blast and will be back asap!

Things to know... The tail is marked.
...briars do stick out from the sides. Not a big deal at all.
...you will ride beside the main dirt road (not a the logging road) at about the 8 mile-ish point...and a left will take you home if you can't make the 18mile loop.
...intermediate for the most part. It does push the advanced level in few spots.
...go ride it!! Spend the day. Watch out for the horses and be respectful. This entire area has lots to offer.

this was the white trail and is mostly for horses, but was fun on the intermediate level. The trail starts in the Warden Station campground (no warden station there), loop three I think. the red/yellow trail across the street was up a mountain side. If you have the horse power go for it. I don't and after a short while turned around.

Well once I got there, I asked a horseman where to start...and he told me about the 4 trails....Blue, Yellow, White, and Red....LOL I chose the RED trail....big mistake, cause I went there wanting a break from the usual hard ride, for a softer more scenic ride. Well I should of taken the Yellow/White trail as every review I've read has stated how easy they were. Let me tell you the RED trail is not easy...not only is it straight up for long parts of it, it is/was not maintained at all, probably the least ridden trail here. It had continual briars hanging over the trail, as well as many many dead falls. Also had sand pits at the bottom of most hills that you would simply bog down in. It was not a fun ride but at least I can say it was one of the best workouts I've ever had....I'll be going back but I see Yellow/White trail in my future.

This is a set of cross country trails that where built for horse back riding and have now been opened to MTB. Trails offer a nice diversification of riding with nice long runs, good down hills and a vary of climbs. Not much time, ride the white/yellow loop about 1hr ride. Spend the whole day ride the entire yellow or blue loop. Switch things up by throwing in the red trail to your ride. Trail head is at the wardens station horse camp not far from Coleman lake. Coleman lake has camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, picnic areas and walking trails. Its a great place for the whole family.

Great flowing up and down trail in deep woods, well loved. People ride it at night, but what about those mountain lion, coyote, and black bear eyes looking back at you? Bring a picnic lunch to the swimming area at the crystalline mountain lake and make a day of it. If you're from out of town, either camp here or stay at a hotel in Jacksonville. If you are a road rider, try out Bain's Gap climb through the Longleaf Pine Wildlife Preserve.

I was lucky to run into a local at the horse camp/trailhead, a very helpful Anniston firefighter named Jim. He pointed out the trail markers, and gave me a rundown on where the trail would run. I started out on the yellow trail, and he told me that the doubletrack would split off into singletrack, but I must have missed the turn in the fading light. I lost the yellow trail at some point, but it was mirroring the white trail, so I just rode it in. I rode most of it at night, so I didn't take advantage of the speed that is possible, but it seems like a very fun trail if you can get some speed. Jim said the red trail is a lot of fun also.

Really fun trail. A good trail if you want to get up to some good speeds. But watch out for runners and other bikers . It's a very very easy trail probly the best easy trail I have been on ever. Great trail for the family and just to get out and see the true beauty of nature. The trail also flows around Colman lake

Wow, what can I say about this trail? FUN! Easily the best trails in the area. All of the climbs are doable and there are some really fast parts in it. Equally fun both clockwise and counter clockwise. Ideal times to ride are during the week, sunrise and about an hour before sunset on Sunday to avoid horses. If you live within 45 minutes, this should be a regular ride.....

Smooth, flowing singletrack. This trail will get your heart pumping from a few short climbs, and keep it pumping with the fast singletrack on the way down. Watch out for the horses and the "patties" they leave behind. This place is a blast for singlespeeds.
