Mountain Biking Big Park Loop

****   Add a review
#60 of 404 mountain bike trails in Arizona
#1,786 in the world

This is a 3 mile loop through the forest beneath Courthouse Butte. Not much climbing but a lot of short ups and downs with great flow, very twisty, dry creek crossings, lots of small drops, step up's & some semi technical sections. All in all a very fun & fast romp through the woods with some amazing scenery surrounding you. This is a great warm up ride or would be fantastic trail for a beginner/intermediate rider to practice their skills. Lots of fun. Sedona Bike & Bean is located right across the highway for directions, parts or a stiff cup of java!

Getting there
Large trailhead parking lot located at the north end of the Village of Oak Creek (5 mi south of Sedona) on the east side of highway 179. This is also the south trailhead for the Bell Rock Trailway. Can be done either direction but I recommend clockwise which means riding north on the Bell Rock Trailway about .3 mile until the first singletrack to the right. This trail is probably labeled Courthouse Butte Loop as that is the corresponding hiking trail, the Courthouse trail goes left at a Y about 1 mi later and crosses into a Wilderness area (No Bikes Allowed) and is clearly marked. There are a few smaller bootleg trails ridden by the locals but just stick to the main trail and it will eventually take you right back to the parking lot.

Short trail, mellower than a lot of trails in the area but more technical than the Bell Rock Pathway. Good trail to start on, most of the technical features come in drainage crossings. The trailhead can be very crowded on weekends.

Great trail for someone looking to start out easy in Sedona. Lots of fun flow, and can be connected with some of the more techy trails like Hiline. Great way to end the day and get in miles. As with most trails in Sedona, watch out for hikers and trail runners.

Fun trail. Some nice easier tech sections for newer riders. Great views all the way.

It is not possible to ride a loop all the way around Courthouse Butte (there is a strip of wilderness on the back side). Riding Big Park Loop allows you to see the back side, if it's important to you. Beyond that, it's a nice, fun ride. Most of it is pretty mellow, so if you have not been on your bike for awhile this may be a good ride to retune your MTB skills

This was a fun trail with some really cool little whoops and small jumps on the one gradual downhill section. Some minor climbs, nothing major, good to work up a nice sweat and warm up for other rides. Good stuff!

This little loop was a nice surprise. Given it's location and appearance on the map, I expected it to be relatively lame. However, there's some really cool singletrack here. There's a couple nice technical moves, some really flowy roller coaster trail, some cool downhill, a couple opportunites for air, and Sedona's ever-present scenery. It's not very strenuous, but lots of fin, giving you big bang for your buck. Not worth a special trip on its own, but well worth adding on at the end of a long day anytime you start from any of the Village of Oak Creek trailheads. For best results, ride the outer loop in a clockwise direction (but don't take any of the spur trails to the south--they just dead end into a residentail area).
