Mountain Biking Pet - A - Kes

****   Add a review
#212 of 1,345 mountain bike trails in Colorado

I found this little gem completely by accident on my last trip to Fruita. We now have a very entertaining singletrack alternative to the boring dirt road climb that accesses all the great Lunch Loops rides. Start up the road and look for the usual brown BLM post on the right that says "Pet -a Kes." Turn there and enjoy the moderately steem, moderately technical climb to the top of the lunch loops area. From the top you can cut over to Holy Cross or make the next climb up the brutal "Widowmaker" and access Andys/Eagles?Gunny, etc.

Rode from the top down, fast and technical.

Started at the bottom of Eagle's Tail, then took Tab down.

I rode up Pet-A-Kes as part of a grand loop of the Lunch Loops. It is good climbing singletrack that takes you well up towards the top of the area.

One of my absolute favorite climbs in the valley. Four 'obstacles' on the way up. Learn to clean them and start riding it for time.

Great desert scenery at the top. A good number of technical sections and smooth flowy ones too. Its the end of March and the temp was perfect. We also rode the Eagle's Tail trail that connects to it.
There are lots of other trails to explore here but we didn't have time (this time). And there was a nice little jump park for the younger folk.

Fun climb, plenty of obstacles and rock climbs, some relief in between and much more fun once the climb is done!

great trail with a good climb and techy sections. the single track on it is a bit narrow in a few places so caution

Trail is a lot nicer to climb than the doubletrack and can be entered at the bottom or halfway :-) I don't know why these people are saying it intersects with holy cross and widowmaker though because once you reach the end it deadends into high noon which either goes right to eagles tail/wing or left which takes you to the main trail about a 1/4 mile below lemon squeezer and pucker up. Regardless it is a nice alternative to the boring main trail :-P

Because it is the main trail up from the Tabegauche trailhead, it may become redundant after time for some, but Pet-e-kes is a very nice, gentle-grade climb with just enough 'technical' parts to keep you on your toes.

Pet-A-Kes is a great way to climb and access the other lunch loop trails. Good grade with some technical, but it won't wear you out for the ride down the other trails.

This little trail is a most welcome addition to the Lunch Loops area. It used to be the most viable trip up was a boring doubletrack. Now, there's a piece of sweet singletrack to get you up. The grade is moderate and just technical enough to be interesting. The trail is consistently entertaining so that, before you know it, you're at the up and ready to tackle the dreaded Widowmaker hill or come back down the greatest of all trails, Holy Cross.
