Mountain Biking Mountwood

*****   Add a review
#3 of 108 mountain bike trails in West Virginia
#256 in the world

One of the most highly rated trail networks in West Virginia. Loads and loads of well maintained singletrack that has a little bit for everyone. Some pretty good climbs to test your endurance, some really long, fun downhill sections and many different loops or directions to take. Park at the Marina parking lot and pick your poison from there.

This was my first time riding these trails. I rode 15 miles today and I noticed the hard work put in to maintain these trails. Thank you to all the folks that take care of them. The signage on the trails is pretty good and I like they actually have arrows pointing the direction the trail goes, that's very helpful. I do wish I knew if the trails were one way or two way, I did some people traveling the opposite directions of some of the arrows I saw. Trail forks doesn't show some of the trails, so at times it got a little confusing but I was able to figure it out pretty quick. I've been riding since last June and I'm getting better at climbing which is good because there is a lot of it. I did have to hike a bike a few times on the really steep sections, thankfully those sections aren't very long. The downhill sections I rode were very fun. I like the swith backs a lot. The "Beginer B" was pretty fun even though it was uphill almost the entire way. This is where I wish I knew the trail could be traveled both ways because it would be real fun going down it. I rode Little Gnarly, Trailforks rates it a black but it wasn't that bad minus the very very root section on a steep incline. There is a lot of diversity at this park and I can't wait to go back and ride the other trails I haven't seen yet. I will recommend this place to other for sure.

Update: Trails are in great shape. Lots and lots of work being done on the trails and it shows. I don't think I've seen better maintained trails anywhere, especially for how big this place is. Kudos to the trail builders out there. Love Mountwood, wish it were a little closer to me.

Rode here by myself. Parked at marina. Saw no visible sign of where to go from there. Very frustrated until I used Strava to finally find a trail entry point across the road. Really wish I could have found a list of each trail description or a recommended route for a 15 mile ride. I asked on the groups FB page for advice and didn't get a helpful response. I picked trails that seemed to go straight up, down, and then straight up. Guess I should have know the Trip to the Moon must be a climb. Duh
As compared with my usual trails, they were good, hilly, and very natural. Don't recall seeing a berm. Several man made wooden features/ armoring for wet sections.
Many short trails linked together. I felt like I was stopping and looking at a map constantly throughout my ride.
I rode conservatively and walked a few spots since I was alone and did not see any rider.
I assumed in rural WV I would have no cell reception but I was surprised that I did.

Impressive work by the trail crew. I think looking at the trail system from the eyes of a first timer would help with more signage at the parking lot and better route selection. (possibly color coding trails that would put together a beginner, intermediate, and advanced route) I would go back and start on the marina side and not across the road.

Trails are still being added and improved every year. Well maintained, good riding year-round, generally intermediate with some more difficult sections and some more beginner-friendly sections. Climbs are manageable, descents fast and flowing, trails are built sustainably and drain well. Many small bridges as well as logs and rocks covering the wet sections have left these trails generally devoid of any serious mud in all but the worst conditions. Strong local MTB club (RVMBA) maintains trails and builds new sections year-round. Very rideable with any bike from hardtail to fat bike to full suspension. Open year-round and night riding is allowed and practiced. Group rides Wednesday at 5:00 pm and Sunday at 1:00 pm generally year-round most weeks. Contact River Valley Mountain Bike Association on Facebook with questions or if planning a trip.

First time hitting up these trails. Didn't come as prepared as I should have as I had trouble finding the trail head. Once I got past that, I had a blast here. A lot of the trails I've ridden in WV you are either climbing or descending. These trails have a great mix of flow and are a blast. provably one of the best trail systems I've ever ridden and I didn't even scratch the surface here. I'll definitely be coming back.

Flowing fun singletrack, well-maintained by a dedicated group of local cyclists for the last couple decades. Trails are well-marked and consist of various length loops totaling around 32 miles, most of which can be ridden in one big tour through the mountains. These trails are especially outstanding in their rain-resistance, owing in part to the soil conditions and in large part to the carefully designed trails which shed water off. Some of the older trails do run down fall lines and can collect some water, but most of them are still hard underneath and you come out with cleaned tires most times. The River Valley Mountain Bike Association (RVMBA) is the primary group that works these trails . A number of volunteers have been doing this for many years, building up a base of rocks, log runs and bridges to keep the trail flowing along and keep riders out of the mud that would otherwise pepper the hills and hollers that these trails run along. Monthly trail maintenance as well as frequent ad-hoc repairs are performed year-round. If you are looking for highly technical singletrack like Canaan or Davis, this is not what you're looking for. If you're looking for singletrack playground and a foot or two of swooping undulating rail perched along hill sides, along ridges and overlooking forest and lake views, this is a destination you'll want to visit.

Rode copperhead trail to moon trail, fun times. Having rained day before yesterday trail was only muddy in one or two spots. Not very technical but flowed nice.

rode here with the RVMBA and OMBC race. Only did the sport division, but those 13 miles and 1800 feet of elevation gain were great. this trail was in fantastic shape, considering all the rain we had in the days prior. Can't wait to ride more here as the uphills were challenging, but the downhill was great. nice switchbacks, some nice features, creek crossing. Well done RVMBA.

Love Heading south in the spring for a ride at Mountwood. this trail has the climbs and miles for a great spring training ride. The copperhead trail has some nice flow and fast. I've done the race that WVMBA puts on in the spring. This is a great event and draws out a lot of bikes. Also gets 5 stars for being well maintained early in the riding season. Fun trail.

One word..............FLOW!! These trails are well maintained and groomed. Some sweet bridges, awesome downhills and some nice long climbs. Hats off to RVMBA. Mount wood is the host of the largest MTB race in the state of WV. Check it out if your in the Parkersburg area.

Great ride. This trail fits the exact description of 'single track'. Nice switchback climbs with rewarding downhill. A few exposed rocks and roots on the trail to keep you sharp. Cant wait to get back here. Worth checking out.

In my opinion, one of the best kept "secrets" in the state. Variety of terrain with fun downhills mixed in with some short, steep climbs. Some awesome bridges thrown in too. You can link up as many trails as you'd like, ride the trails in either direction and create an endless combination of loops. Hat tip to the riding community and park caretakers, for keeping these trails well marked and in great shape.

These trails are considered our home. RVMBA works hard and does a great job maintaining the trails. We have ridden in the surrounding states and still have a great time here and find it challenging to ride these trails. As a real bonus, these trails are not shared with equestrians or atv's.

Overall just a great time. I live in Florida now and would kill to have access to those kind of trails again.

Glad so many are liking the trails. Just a correction, Warrior Ridge isn't open as of this moment, only the minor beginning of it off Medicine Man. We hope to get it open this fall / winter. Also, didn't see the new trail Minnehaha mentioned. It's a must. It runs off the power line trail and comes out at 4 Corners at the intersection with Caretaker Trail. Some new modifications to a couple bad drainage spots on Medicine Man made for a sweet change and has made it rideable in both directions. Enjoy. Note to all riders: Please use Medicine Man and Tomahawk Trails to get around the dam. We were told we needed to get off the dam/spillway so we built Tomahawk off Medicine Man and it connects to the Lake trail on the west side of the dam. Please do not cross the dam and spillway. A bridge is coming soon on Tomahawk where it crosses the creek below the dam. Hopefully before things start freezing. Stay tuned for more updates.

I recently took a trip here and it was a blast! We satarted at copperhead and rode every trail in the park. The trails that I were most impressed with were Medicine Man and definitely Haystack. Haystack is pretty much an experience. There are sweet views throughout the trail, awesome bridges, and some of the best flowing singletrack Ive ever seen. No brakes required. And Medicine Man is probably the funnest and most intense downhill in the park. These trails, along with copperhead, techumseh,apollo13, etc., makes for some sick riding.
