Mountain Biking Tiger Mountain

*****   Add a review
#4 of 1,206 mountain bike trails in Washington
#117 in the world

Overview:

With many miles of mountain biking trails spanning a wide variety of skill levels and physical challenge - including a bona fide double-diamond DH trail and killer views of Mount Rainier from the summit - Tiger Mountain is one of Seattle's most popular mountain biking destinations.

All trails are open year round, but during the winter months or after significant weather events, the trails are subject to closures: check for updates on this page and on the DNR's Tiger Mountain page here.

There are also many miles of logging roads that are open all year long, but these too may be closed (typically for timber harvest). Check the DNR link above.
Alert

3 New Trails Open on East Tiger Mt: "Easy, Tiger" , "The Legend" and "MegaFauna" form a lollipop loop off of the Northwest Timber trail. Easy Tiger is a green level 2-way trail that will primarily be used as the return path for The Legend, the more difficult black diamond descent. MegaFauna is a gnarly double black diamond descent.Construction of extensions to the trails will continue this fall. Eventually Easy Tiger will connect all the way to the Raging River State Forest!

Top tier trail system. Best climbing trail ever on masterlink/quickling is followed by an amazing vista. Predator is a work of art but takes a lot of skill and commitment, which wasn't good for my single run. Can't wait to try it again. Summit trail and the ones that follow it are all exceptional, at least by Oregon standards, which are pretty high. Rough but manicured and challenging but rewarding, there's always something to do and to see. The soil was amazing even in pouring rain, but appreciating this great trail I rode slow through the puddles and saturated tire print mud. Drops, berms, hips, steeps, it's all here in an intermediate form.
Silent Swamp near the bottom of the summit trail isn't another route to the bottom, you climb out, but I recommend it. It has the most bridge/catwalk wooden structures of any trail I've ever seen in Oregon. They're numerous, long, and linked together by little armored rock sections. It's a must ride trail if you enjoy a real good mountain bike ride.
Evergreen Mtb alliance is great based on this trail.

Super nice work by the Evergreen peeps. Technical trail with a handful of launchers. Bring your A game!

Tiger Mountain is the standard to which I hold all other trails/systems. Great dirt, a wide range of difficulty, and a solid foundation of trail construction.

I used to ride preston railroad in the 90s. Even in the middle of summer there were long swampy sections and forget about winter.

Recent trailwork has made amazing progress and these trails can be climbed in the winter.

The road to the top is good for grinding intervals, if you're after a specific workout, it is a single 1500' climb, but not exactly fun.

There is an uphill climbing trail being finished right now. Supposed to be terrific through old growth. Can't wait.

For now my recommended route is to go:

From parking at the highway take the right road (gated) for 1/4 mile or so. If you kept on it that road leads to the summit (take the right in a few miles, then the left)
Anyway, take a right at start of Northwest timber trail
    Left turn Up Joyride
    Down Silent swamp
Right turn down road for 1/4 mile to start of Preston
Left Up Preston (long zig zags)
    Up tiger summit trail
Right turn to go up little bit of steep road to actual summit (picnic tables)
Down summit trail to where it intersects road (and the trail you came up on).
Down the trail you were on before for 100 yards or so then Right Turn on OTG (there's a rock berm you go over)
    Down OTG
    Down Fully Rigid
    Down JoyRide
Back to parking lot via Northwest Timber Trail.

Total of 15.5 miles and 2700' of climbing, and only a 1/2 mile on gravel. Pretty nice way to spend a morning.

What a wonderful place. The trails are in great shape, parking is good, and the down hill is great. The trails are kept in very good shape and if you want an easier way up you can ride the forest service road to the top the bomb the well built down hill.

Being from SoCal this was awesome trees, roots rocks, super fun. Preston RR, joyride, and a couple more. Got very lucky and met some locals who showed me around.

First time for me up on Tiger but had a blast. Conditions were tacky and grippy with only a few small puddles

Very fun trail. Its a grind up to the top especially if you are used to riding in the flat lands of Florida. Its about 4 miles up hill with 2000 feet of elevation gain. Trail was not technical but was extremely fun to be going downhill for such an extended period of time. Trails are relatively well marked but without knowing the area well I had to stop at every intersection to ensure I was going the correct way. I still ended up missing a small section of one of the trails. Some suggestions to improve would be carbonite signs to say what trails lead to what and minimaps on the signs to tell you where you are and the way you are going. If I lived in the area I would hit the trail whenever I get the chance and from what the locals in Seattle said, it's the best trail that is close by so its a must ride if in Seattle.

New Trails Summer 2014, new map posted in photos. East Tiger Summit Trail adds 1.5 miles of nice flow and mild technical from the peak of East Tiger meeting up at the start of Preston Railroad Trail. Off The Grid (2.5 mi) from East Tiger Peak, Fully Rigid (0.5mi), Silent Swamp Trail (1.5mi), and Joyride (1mi) which end up at the start of NW Timber Trail.

I LOVE this ride!! Preston RR gets advanced rating due to all the rocks and roots, especially when they're wet, which is most the time. Preston RR has new section, which smooth and flowing. NW Timber is intermediate except for one short section. Overall, great two hour ride!!!

The WTA and Evergreen MTB Alliance, have done a ton of work on the Preston RR and NW Timber trails over the winter. The unfortunate part is, this trail system is so over used, it needs a ton of work every winter. Thank you and major props to the folks who put in the shovel time. The timber on Tiger mountain is owned by the state Education Trust, and will be logged in perpetuity. The $$ from the sale of the timber helps fund public schools in the state of Washington. The trail builders, have done a fantastic job of reconnecting the trail through the logged sections. The Preston RR trail, is very rooty and rocky, but not a thrash for an intermediate rider such as myself. The Northwest Timber trail, which connects back to the parkng lot, is much less rooty and rocky, very buttery in many places. This trail system is, as others have posted, well worth the grind up the logging road.

been hiking here before it was an mtb trail and got to ride here once.. best trail I've ever ridden. go up gravel road and ride down singletrack. only one tough spot, a 5ft drop through boulders and roots, rideable but glad I had warning and just rolled down through that part.

My favorite trail. Especially Preston RR trail.
You should have some skills for this ride. The way to get to this trail is difficult but, it's worth it. Dual suspension bike works better for this ride, that's for sure.

Incredibly the trails are closed for logging. Who is responsible for raping Tiger Mountain? Large swaths of land are being logged at this very moment. The Northwest Timber Trail has been bisected due to clear cutting large swath out of it. This is very disturbing and what a shame we treat our land this way!

Trial was in good shape this year. (closed for on Oct.15 unless extended) Most of the bridges were rebuilt this year on the lower trail. As posts indicate below know where you are going or go with someone who knows where they are going. I have seen too many people riding up the highway after a bad turn.

Just so everyone knows its Eatbound from I-5 and West bound from I-90. It is an amazing ride. Watch the wet rocks and logs.
