This is a great trail that will have you wishing you had your less travel/more travel/hardtail/something else depending on where you are on the trail. The level of enjoyment of this trail can vary widely based on conditions, when the trail was worked on last, and how fit you are. There is a little something for everyone and a must ride if in the DC area.

This is only for Green and Blue- haven't ridden Black yet. This place would get five stars even if the trails sucked simply because it is the only mountain bike only one way trail around DC. But in addition to that the trails are awesome. Relatively smooth and not too technical for the most part but a number of manmade obstacles and drops that progress in height and difficulty with the color of the trail. Very rolly terrain and the downs have lots of rollers and tabletops that allow for some airtime. Helps to know the trails to know when they are coming so you can get your speed right- so don't feel bad if first time you miss a lot- keep going back and it will get better. Only downer is there is always more pedalling than I seem to remember!! Lol. Closed a lot if it's wet- call ahead 703-250-9124 then hit 1.

I had given Fountainhead a bad review in the past, primarily because of the trails frequently being closed with no consistent notification system. You'd call the number and it wouldn't give an accurate status. Regardless it looks like they've rectified the issue. These trails are pretty spectacular. I love all the manmade features and you can tell a lot of thought went into building these.

Great trail. I'm a nube so not a lot to compare to. I found the uphill climbs with exposed roots challenging and a blast.

Memorial Day Weekend 2018. Wanted a nice ride to get my MTB feet back. The main trail was closed :-( . I suspect that b/c of all the recent heavy rain the trail was still a bit boggy; but we did ride the Bull Run hiking/biking trail on the other side of the parking lot and it was great. More ups and downs than I expected (I'm used to biking IN the mountains in CO) and it was a lot of fun! Can't wait to try the dedicated trail system when it opens.

Follow the link below for an awesome highlight video from Fountain Head Regional Park! Mountain biking Fountain Head Regional Park in Virginia is an absolute blast! Fountain Head consists of three loops - green, blue, and black. Each loop takes you a bit deeper into the woods and increases in technicality. We did the full loop and covered around 15 miles and 1,500 feet of elevation. If you are into technical chunky riding, this place may not be the fit for you. Fountain Head is hard packed, fast, and flowy with a ton of man made berms and jumps to keep you bouncing around the trail. Don't be fooled though you have to work for your fast downhill runs here as you bob in and out of the hills. The views are pretty amazing as well as you blast through the woods along the Occaquan Reservoir. I post new videos from different spots in the Northeast every Monday, so be sure to subscribe for more! https://youtu.be/isP4WWEKNE4

This is a terrific trail network. First time here and it was an absolute blast. IMO, it is very well laid out to maximize trail flow within the context of amount of acreage and terrain of the park. It's basically a dedicated playground for mtb'ers. The current trail length as indicated by the mile markers is ~15m if you ride through the entire system (although only 12.7m registered on my Garmin). It's uni-directional which is great as you never have to worry about someone coming the other way as you fly around a corner. These trails are really built for intermediate & advanced riders. There are quite a few climbs although they are relatively short and have been designed to snake back up as opposed to the descents which are fun and fast! Plenty of opportunity to test your skills - and get some air - with plenty of rollers, bumps, drops, banks, rocks, skinnies, etc. If only all trails were half as well maintained as FH! Among the most fun trail systems I've ridden. Can't wait to go back.

This trail is an absolute monster. It starts out with beginner trail and it gradually moves all they way to double diamond. My friends broke his chain on the first half mile. About 8 miles in I broke my frame. This trail has a lot of flow to it with obstacles, jumps, climbs, and even drop offs. I had a blast. On my next vacation I will return with a fresh frame (repaired under warranty) ready to master this one again.

This is the best trail in the DC area, bar none. I usually ride the beginner and intermediate trails, rode the expert trails as a kid before they really started building them up. Lots of flowy up and down, plenty of interesting features, including a number of plywood ramps, skinnies, etc.

Great trails with tons of steep/long climbs. Some great downhills on the back end of the climbs but more climbing than downhills by far. There aren't tons of bail outs like in some other trail systems so don't go further in than you can handle. You'll likely have to turn around & backtrack your way out at some point. Def worth a ride, but navigation can be a bit tricky.

It is a ~15 mi series of 3 one-way loops and they mark every -.25 mi or so, which is nice. It is in a river valley with nice views of the Occoquan Reservoir. It is a lot of climbing: up and down, up and down... they seem to want to maximize flow but the downhill sections are relatively short. It is all single track and most is cut into the side of hills with copious built-up berms. There are some features they built in that are challenging, like some rock gardens and RR tie-like steps and several tough, rooty short climbs. There are some surprises: in a couple places the trail goes around a tree and a surprise 1 foot drop is on the other side. There are a handful of ramp-facilitated multi-foot drops (with ride-arounds), some bridges, skinnys, and log piles. A remark from personal preference... the park seems... "unnatural." When you look through the forest, the cut-in trail and the large berms are very noticeable. It seems like they made the most of a small space, but I often remarked to myself, "what were they thinking?" in reaction to the trail seemingly forced on the land instead of the land dictating the trail. The rock gardens are mostly and obviously man-made. With natural rock gardens, there is usually some sort of awareness that a rock garden may be coming: a gradual thinning of the soil, increase in exposed rock on the lead up, or entering a dry wash. That really characterizes much of Fountainhead: it is fine riding, but for me was missing a connection with the land. Context: I ride around Richmond, VA, but have also ridden in AL, Durham/Raleigh area, and various trails in VA.
