Mountain Biking Prairie Trail, Custer State Park

*****   Add a review
#5 of 43 mountain bike trails in South Dakota
#1,505 in the world

At the trailhead, head straight out. Once you hit the first fork, you may either
go left or right, I recommend going right because you'll do less climbing. You
will be climbing large rocks at the beginning and some areas are not rideable.
No different than many trails in this mountain area. This trail is much like
Centennial #89; rocky, big and steep climbs as well as fast descents, with your
occasional creek crossing. Very scenic and worth the run. Much shorter than
Centennial #89, this being 3 miles long. Keep distance from Buffalo.

Getting there
From Custer, take Highway 16A east to Custer State Park. Maps are provided at
the park entrance, entrance fee $15 for 7 days. Once in the park continue east
on Highway 16A until you reach Highway 87, take 87 south until you reach the
Wildlife Loop Road on your left which will have another entrance station (Blue
Bell Entrance Station). Continue roughly 5 miles south on Wildlife Loop Road
until you reach Prairie Trail. At the trailhead is a gravel parking area with a
kiosk sign and a restroom.

Rode this trail Sept 18, 2012. This trail will give you a short taste of what much of the trails are like in Custer State Park. Many rocks, big climbs and well earned descents with your occasional creek crossings. Many technical sections that are fun and challenging. Very scenic and was a blast to ride. Some areas are not rideable due to a combination of rocks and climbing. Most trails are like this in the area. Well worth the effort and will ride again. There are two sections where you will have to cross a fenced area. Bikes fit through one fine and the other my bars were too wide, just had to put the bike over the fence. Keep your distance from Buffalo and enjoy. Take care.
