Mountain Biking Haleakala Downhill Mtb Ride

****   Add a review
#5 of 33 mountain bike trails in Hawaii
#2,962 in the world

You begin the ride at the end of the road past all of the parking lots where

the green cattle guard is, (this is the beginning of the Skyline Trail). This
/>
trail can lead you all the way to the service road that you must take to ride

to get down the rest of the Mountain, But when we went we went on the

Mamane trail that goes off of the Skyline trail, but ends up on the same
/>
service road. The Mamane trail is a very fun single track that can be fast at

times and has no climbs. At the end of this trail you reach the service road.

At this point you need to go RIGHT in order to reach Waipoli Rd. that takes

you down to Highway 377. Waipoli Rd. is amazing fast fun, and at times you

can reach speeds of 50mph. And at the end of this road you will reach the

Highway and wait for your ride.

Getting there
From the Airport you need to get on Haleakala Highway or 37 (same thing).

Then get onto Highway 377 and take this all the way to Crater Rd. and this

will take you to the top of Haleakala at 10,023ft.

Very wet when I rode in February, great trail, beautiful climb and flowy decent. A great time and I can't wait to get back to Maui and ride it again

A must for any serious MTB'ers. The DH bikes that Neil at Crater Cycles were perfect. Not very technical, but plenty to get the pucker factor going

I rented a bike from Crater Cycles near Kahului airport. I would recommend that shop, good gear and great advice. Got to the summit at 4:20 AM in darkness, watched a beautiful sunrise over Haleakala, then started on the skyline trail. Bring warm clothes, the summit is cold. I started at about 6:45 and I had the entire back side of the volcano to myself, on average 600 people watch the sunrise up there, but I was the only one that brought a mountain bike. The first section was thick volcanic pumice that wasn't fun to ride, very loose with the front and back wheels sliding around. I was glad the shop gave me shin and elbow pads because a fall would have been very unforgiving. After that I hit some old back roads that were fast and fun with great views(I think it's clearer just after sunrise). The Mamane trail was fun and Flowy single track that becomes slightly more technical with roots about halfway down. I was warned against riding the lower section so I turned off at waipoli rd, and then had fun flying down the paved rd to lavender farms to meet my ride. This was a very unique ride and I would strongly recommend to anyone that has someone willing to take them to the top.

Awesome trail - starts above the treeline and works its way down into beautiful singletrack through a fantastic pine forest. Has rocks, roots, and smooth fast sections. Love it!
