Mountain Biking Oak Mountain State Park Bump Trail

*****   Add a review
#2 of 97 mountain bike trails in Alabama
#73 in the world

18 mile loop that includes singletrack, access road, old hiking trails, special sections (such as the ROCK GARDEN, and BLOOD ROCK). Kept in very good condition by the BUMP club. For extra information you can call Crestline Cycle in Birmingham and someone their could probably help you out. The USA MTB team trained here a month before the Olympics which says something about the quality of the trails.

Rider questions

Q: I am planning a trip through the South later this year. If I could only ride one, which trail system should I ride and why -- Oak Mountain or Coldwater Mountain?
A: Coldwater mountain would be more long climbs if you want to ride from the top down. Oak mountain has varied terrain with other riding areas within an hours drive. Both are fun. I would guess oak mountain has more riders on any given day but I personally haven't had any issues with traffic on the trails. Birmingham also offers more post biking activities.

Q: Which trail would you guys suggest for beginners? My husband and I are looking to spend the day at Oak Mountain this weekend. Take a lunch, the eno hammocks, and our bikes for a day out. Suggestions?
A: Answering my own question in hopes that it will help others in the future. We found (through this awesome site!) our LBS (Cahaba Cycles) and they were having a beginner mountain bike ride. We joined them and had an absolutely wonderful while learning so much! We did the Lake trail to the end and back. It was a nice, fun trail with enough ups and downs to keep us noobs on our toes while still having a blast. The views of the lake were stunning and the trails clearly marked.

Very good trail system. You can link segments short or long, easy or rad, or pack a little of everything into one big ol' loop with tons of variety. There are monster climbs to be had, along with long descents, and no shortage of rocks and roots to keep you on your toes. Impressive network being so close to a population center. Unfortunately, you can hear road noise for most of the ride, so you never get as much of a feeling of being "out there" as you think you should given the dense vegetation.

After 2 days and 100 miles on OMSP, I see why this has been made an IMBA Epic. There is a little for everyone, The Lake Trail for beginners, lots for ameaturs including Jekyl and Hyde, and good technical for the experts including Blood Trail and Boulder Ridge. I rode Friday and Saturday. There was almost no one in the trail on Friday and Saturday was quite a few in the easier trails and not many on the more challenging ones. I would recommend a full suspension and sidewall protection for your tires. I tore a sidewall on Centipede Trail. Overall, very fun trail system.

Awesome ride. Until last weekend, it had been many years since my last ride at Oak Mtn. There have been many changes made to make a great ride even better. We did miss one turn, ended up on the hardtop and missed some good downhill, :(. Also found myself on a horse trail at the base of Johnson's mountain...

Like the small new jumps that have been added.

This trail system has everything for trail mtb biker. I stayed at the campground for three days and explored this state park. Very happy with trail condition well kept. Even rode the new lake connector. Definitely coming back.

Drove from Oklahoma to check these trails out. They were nice, but not... epic. The trails themselves offer a variety of obstacles and some nice flow, but lacked in big swoops, drops, and scenic views that I was expecting from such a highly rated trail. They are well maintained and mostly clearly marked, although at one point we briefly were lost on a horse trail, but quickly back tracked to a road. I enjoyed having maps scattered throughout trail junctions to help reorient myself. Facilities are nice and clean. It has a variety of beginner to advanced level trails. Something for everyone with plenty of mileage to never get stale. Certainly better than the trails we have in my home state, but again, not quite the amazing views or big drops that I was expecting.

This place is awesome, I always have a great time there. Props to the BUMP crew for keeping these trails in great shape. It rained hard while I was out there and for the most part the trail shed the water very well. The bottom connector trail from the south TH up to Jekyll and Hyde was really muddy, but J&H was in very good condition with only a few puddles.

Super fun trail system! Had a blast riding these trails. There truly is something for everyone. These trails are very well laid out with "flow" in mind. As others have commented, the climbs are gradual and the downhills are "smile city". Parked by the lake and rode the eastern trails on day 1. This included Seven Bridges, Garrett's Gulch, Rock Garden, the Chimneys and Cat Dog Snake. Those trails have nice flow but really not much elevation change and were not very memorable. Unfortunately when I went to ride Lightning a massive rain storm came through and put an early end to my day :( Day 2 I headed west. The Lake trail is a nice warm up with beautiful views of the lake. Took that to Rattlesnake to Mr Toads where you get into some nice singletrack but still not much elevation change. I made the mistake of taking the next loop counterclockwise (Foreplay, Johnson's Mtn and Blood Rock) which is a tough climb going up some rocky slopes/steps but must be a blast going down. From here it was Bump to Centipede to Jekyll & Hyde. These were all fun but J&H is an absolute blast... seemingly endless downhill with numerous bumps to catch some air and enough challenge to keep you technically honest. Heading back the way I came it was shred time since I was now familiar with these trails. To me, any time you feel like you end a ride feeling like it was mostly downhill is a great ride and the sign of a well designed trail.

Plenty of varied singletrack ranging from technical, rocky, root-covered sections to smooth flowing downhill stretches. Oak mountain can challenge any rider.

Went to Oak Mtn this weekend to ride the Red Loop. 1st time to ride any of the trails. Ended up riding ~20 miles on day 1. Rode counterclockwise as that is how the Bump website covers the loop...man was that tough! I would advise clockwise for smoother ride.
Rode small loop on day 2 (6 miles) before heading home, this time clockwise. So much better experience! This is an incredible place to ride, was very impressed with the level of skill I saw many of the riders exhibiting. There is room for all levels of experience here. All the riders were very helpful and willing to give their recommendations and advice. Will definitely ride this again!

Pretty cool trails here. We rode Johnson's and Jekyll and Hyde. Reminds me of FATS (aka flowy with some nice rollers to get air off of), but with more elevation change and more technical.
