Mountain Biking Big Rock Trail #3

*****   Add a review
#37 of 538 mountain bike trails in North Carolina
#748 in the world

Connect to the top of this trail via Cedar Rock #16.

Ridden from the top down, this is a screaming descent! Be prepared for
undulating slickrock with plenty of drop-off opportunities, rocky singletrack
with table tops, and even more large rock drops. Bring your balls and get
ready to rip!

The climb to the top and the descent are in great shape. the access trails and access fire roads are almost like little creek beds and full of water from the recent downpours. Still great, but just be ready to get wet.

Even though the trail width is a good bit more than 6 inches, i still rated it according to the grade and drops. There are plenty of good drops on this trail. Some are between knee and waist high. Have fun, but be careful.

I've only actually climbed this trail, but descending it looks like it would be a blast! Coming up, it's not as bad of a climb as it seems. If you get through the gnarly, rowdy spots that are a thrilling ride on the way down, the rest of the trail is definitely steep but completely rideable. And the slickrock gives you so much traction at the top that you can finally start focusing on the views that will appear around you and not on your legs!

I ride this as a figure 8 with Burnt MTN. Keeping your speed up during the Big Rock downhill makes it probably the most enjoyable downhill run I've had to date. If you keep your speed and choose your line, there is actually really great flow to the DH segment and you can use the stepdowns to launch over many of the obstacles. I'd call it a blue/black rather than a true black (compare this with upper Black Mtn, which I see as a true black diamond).

Great view from the top. It was kind of windy so we didn't stay long. A great place to work on line choice. Gets a little sketchy at the bottom.

Little work involved but such an awesome trail. Some nice technical too! All of the DuPont trails are super sweet!

This was an amazing kick in the butt to get to the top! It was way too difficult for my 13 year old so I wouldn't advise it for the youth unless they are in better shape than you;) But I felt like a million dollars at the top. Completely worth the trip, but not what I would call a fun ride, because I was walked the bike going down at points. The rocks drop off pretty steep and I have no health insurance for injuries;) It's a ride that I would love to do again though.

Awesome steep slickrock descent, or a brutal ascent if you're feeling particularly daring. Highly advanced features - long stretches of slickrock, roots, stair steps and steep rock gardens. It also features probably the best overlook in the entire forest - not at the famous signpost, but about .25 miles from the top - don't miss it.

One hell of a climb... but running it down was awesome. Slickrock and drop-offs. Defiantly takes some balls to descend this trail at speed.

Slickrock on the East Coast. Super-fun trail that's totally different from the rest of the WNC experience. If you go to Dupont, you must do this trail.

This trail is fast technical. Thanks to the volunteers for all the work on this trail recently. Now get out and ride!

Awesome Awesome Awesome! This is THE eastern slickrock trail. Pretty technical, tough exposed slickrock climbs, tabletops, drops, Boulders, wide open fast sections, beautiful forest, great views, and one of the coolest downhills you'll likely ever ride. If you find yourself in Dupont, It may be short, but THIS is the one trail you do not want to miss.* Review edited 11/27/2011

This may be the greatest mile of downhill singletrack that you will ever ride on a mountain bike! Like I said above, there is everything from slickrock to gnarly singletrack to table tops to large drops. Bring your A-Game, and your suspension! This downhill is to die for! Definitely a black diamond.
