Mountain Biking Colorado Trail: Green Mountain

*****   Add a review
#79 of 1,345 mountain bike trails in Colorado
#558 in the world

This is the trail Leah and I have been looking for since we moved to Colorado. Sweet,
smooth singletrack, beautiful scenery, and a good mix of climbs and descents. This is easily
my favorite trail in the front range area and probably the whole state. This trail is great for
people of all skill levels - just make sure you turn around before you get tired. Since this is
an out and back (with a loop at the end) it can be difficult to gauge how far you've been
(and how far you have to go!) Lots of riders here in case you get in trouble. "The Tsali of
the Front Range."

Getting there
From Colorado Springs, take US 24 to Woodland Park. Turn right onto CO 67 and go to Deckers. Continue straight onto CO 126 approximately 15 miles. Turn left onto road 550. Parking lot is on the right. There is a $4 daily use fee.

Rider questions

Q: 200 W 48th Ave, Denver, CO 80216

Q: Hi every body, i will be with a friend in Denver colorado in a conference 13-17 October. I would like to do 2-3 days of mountainbiking before the conference. i will have a car and i dont care to invest 3-4 hours on the road in order to have a decent singletrack with nice landscapes. my limit is acrophobia (fear of heights). Any suggestions?

Another classic section of the Co Trail. Definetly beginner friendly from a tech stand point, it will be the the cumulative mileage and hills that challange the beginner, not any one aspect. Legit single track and absolutely beautiful!

Just a beautiful setting and trail. Kind of charming with all the seedlings in the understory. Some nice climbs for conditioning. And if you like to go fast, you can really let it go on the DHs. It seems you are always either going up or down. It makes for a very enjoyable XC ride.

I stayed in Pike Nat'l forrest near Little Scraggy trailhead, which is where I got on this trail. I had so much fun riding that day I did not want to stop. Hilly, rocky, undulating, and exhilarating. I will go back. The campsite next to the trail was free and awesome as well. Day use fee $6. Gladly!!

So far I've only ridden the Kenosha pass to Georgia pass section and it is really fun. Nothing too technical, but some great flowy singletrack especially in the fall with the changing aspens

Great trail. I did this today. I normally take the CO Trail but veer off to the north towards Shinglemill. Today I went straight and did the loop. Much better ride. All tree covered. There's a couple okay descents and when you come back around the climbs are not too bad. I'd describe this trail as 'rolling' with equal amounts of climbing and descending throughout the 20 miles. I'm not a big fan of the kind of trails that are climbclimbclimb then descendescenddescent like most Front Range trails. It reminds me of a bigger, prettier, longer, Lair O Bear. This is a great trail for a beginner but it was lots of fun on my fat bike. The only thing to watch out for is the kitty litter trail conditions which could wash out beginners if they oversteer. Great trail. I rode the loop opposite of what the PDF/GPX says. I will try the other way another time. Rather than starting at Little Scraggy, I started at the Forrest Road with the closed gate a bit before. It's free. This would also be a good place to start a beginner because there is a WIDE road for them to 'warm up' on. It took me three hours, but I stopped a few times to take pictures and enjoy the scenery. Plus, since I was on my first time and I was on the fat bike, that slows me down. There are a few rooty sections, but most of the roots can be bypassed by picking the right line. There was only one kinda gnarly spot that was too much for my fully loaded (CTR Training) Fat Bike. If I was on my all mountain bike, I'd blaze through it.

We've hit this a couple time after work in the summer. If you can, do this. You'll finish up at sunset and almost have the trail to yourself. Sweet singletrack and thick forest. Great downhills and a good workout.

My son and I rode this from the trailhead at CR 126 and road 550 and had a great time.
Roots and sandy sections sporadically mar the otherwise wonderful singletrack trail. Nice and shady most of the way and its about 10 degrees cooler in Pine than Denver.
It was Saturday but the trail wasn't that crowded. Encountered several groups/solo riders during the ride - all were friendly except for one crabby guy who didn't look like he was having much fun.
Beautiful scenery - nice sweeping downhills - plenty of places to stop and enjoy the forest setting.

Ok, so rode this trail as well as 15 mi of pure mtb perfection along the CO trail and Morrison/Shinglemill. Parked closer to the trail-head at the Meadow CG, then rode the loop. Every bit of climbing was worth it and while the climb is long and easy-going, the altitude was an adjustment. Linked this trail to others and man, WHAT A DAY!!! CO trail leading into it is a blast so if you start at Scraggy, be prepared to climb for a bit and then be rewarded with some very nice downhill. Truly an epic day.

Rode on a Friday, not many people on trail. Very nice single track trail, fast for the most part. No real technical portions but most of the climbing is on the return but nothing to be worried about. Per the grading criteria this would be listed as an intermediate level trail but I would categorize it as a "advanced" easy trail. I might not bring a first time rider out on it only due to distance but I would not hesitate to take beginners on the trail.

This is a really nice trail; like everyone else says, very smooth singletrack with limited obstacles. There are a few technical sections that require getting over some pretty high roots. There are uphills, downhills, and flats going both out and back, which is nice when you're used to up all the way out and down all the way back. The trail is really loose throughout most of the ride; there's a lot of sand and gravel-like stuff, which makes it hard to blast up the short, steep sections. Might be easier with an all-mountain tire (I was on XC tires). Overall, a lot of fun, and highly recommended!

The Green Mountain Loop is probably the most technical riding of the Buffalo Creek area due to some roots and rocks, but it's still pretty fast and hilly. At the top of the loop you'll get high enought to ride in the Aspen.

A great balance of continuous climbing and descending. The climbing is gradual and never too steep. The downhill is fast and flowing. There's one brief section of rocks, but most of the trail is super smooth which makes it feel less than 16 miles. Super fun.

So just got off this great trail, and I must say it was even better than I thought. Super fast, easy twisty fun! I must say if you live in Denver skip apex for the thousandth time and hit this up. Drive to pine and then down though don't fallow the instructions of this site. Also don't be fooled into pay parking just past the first lot the trail crosses the road 550 where the happens to be a plethora of parking. Just kick the rednecks out of the way! Also if you want to make it shorter for new riders it is easy and quite possible. Just follow 550 and go down the first left the trail meets the road there as well. Fun stuff!

Pretty sweet trail, great views and good dirt. I went on a weekday and was basically alone once I reached a mile or two in. It's a bit on the lengthy side, as far as mileage goes, but other than that it's doable by an intermediate rider. Be cautious when nearing the turnoff for green mt, it's easy to miss the sign if your not paying attention. Overall a great addition to any riders hit-list for the Denver/Buffalo Creek area.

A pretty fun section of the Colorado Trail - generally rolling with just a few sustained climbs/descents. The trail is wider than I'd prefer, pretty hammered by the throngs of people who ride/hike here. The Green Mtn. loop is cute, but nothing memorable. It's very easy to combine this ride with loops in the Buffalo Creek network to make an all day epic.

Good mix of up&down, lots of tree roots in the middle of the route. A handful of technical spots. Good shade. On the border between beginner and intermediate. Eastern start of route is about 500' higher elevation than the west edge at Meadows Group campground.

It's worth the moderate drive from the front range. There will be a lot of use on weekend days -- it's a great trail and the crowds are the result.
Still, this is a great singletrack, lolly pop style loop. The terrain varies from side hill traverse to open to treed.
I certainly haven't explored all "close in" to Denver/ Boulder rides, but so far this is my favorite!
