Mountain Biking Coldwater Mountain

*****   Add a review
#1 of 97 mountain bike trails in Alabama
#11 in the world

The first 10 miles of what will hopefully become a 60 mile trail system are now in place and ready for riders. As of the writing of the description, trails currently consist of an easy 1 mile beginners loop and a 9 mile intermediate loop which encircles the mountain and takes full advantage of the terrain and elevation. Think of these current loops as flow trails with elevation. If you crossbred F.A.T.S. and Pisgah, this would be their baby. Trails flow clockwise.

Update 3/5/14: Coldwater Mountain now has 25 miles of trail. IMBA has arrived 3/2014 and plans to add 11 more miles over the next couple months bringing the trail to approximately 35 total miles.

Rider questions

Q: would this be a good place for a begginer to come ride?
A: It's definitely a good place to start. The Baby Bear and Mama Bear trails are a fairly easy beginners trail. As you get better, there are some great challenges further up the mountain!

Q: do they have water and do they have camping on site?
A: No water or camping. :(

Wow, what a ride. You won't be dissappointed. It's fast, technical, flows, and just rocks! I grinned from ear to ear the entire way down this run. You'll climb up Cassidy to get there from the lot we used, but your downhill reward will more than justfy the effort. If you have the time and the legs, hit Goldilocks when you're at Coldwater. We hit that sections twice.

Absolutely fantastic trail system. The trails are very well marked and maintained. This should be on the epic list of trails. There is enough terrain out there that will challenge the most accomplished rider, you can even bite off more than you can chew. Hard climbs, fast down hills, awesome rock gardens! Love this place...must ride

We decided to stop by this trail on our way through the area on our way back to Dothan, AL since it is only a few miles off the interstate. This was the first time riding these trails and we really enjoyed the ride. The intermediate trails have a lot of loose rocks which makes the trails a challenge when riding here for the first time. We have come to appreciate all the "For Ever Wild" hiking and biking trails here in Alabama.

I've only been mountain biking for a little under a year, but this is hands down the best downhill run I've found. It just keeps on giving. And if the speed and flow isn't enough how about a heaping helping of rocks to keep things interesting? The climb at the end back up to the Coldwater springs trailhead is really demoralizing though. It's like the bomb dog is giving you the middle finger at the end of the ride.

Hands down my favorite place to ride. I did 28 miles yesterday and was grinning a real big grin the whole time. Coldwater offers up the best of modern trail design while maintaining a rugged and out there feel. Rocks are more or less your constant companion with numerous chunky sections spread all over the mountain, the chunkiest is Gazza and is not for the faint of heart. The flowy sections on talladega, trillium, hare, Oval Office and bomb dog are exquisite and allow for absolutely ludicrous levels of speed if you stay off the brakes. Air time is real easy to find here if you're feeling bold. I'm not sure how up to date the trail maps posted everywhere are, I found a bunch of new stuff I didn't know about down by the Anniston trailhead yesterday. There seems to be more and more getting added to this thing all the time. It's worth visiting if you're anywhere in the Deep South. Tons and tons of miles to chew up and Anniston is a great little town with plenty to do when you finish up. If it was possible to give more than 5 stars to Coldwater I would.

I just rode out here today. i rode the Baby and Mama Bear trails. I wouldn't call these beginner trails; more like novice. Still a beginner could ride these particular trails. The Baby Bear connects to Mama Bear. Mama Bear is downhill for probably the first 2 miles. The next 1.5 is mostly switchbacks uphill. Then there's a relatively flat but very fast section towards the end. Overall I clocked 3.7 miles which was great for the short ride I was looking for(due to time). I am going to get out here earlier next time and try to do all the beginner trails. Someone told me it's about 8 miles of beginner trails. Anyhow, I saw enough of these trails to realize these are awesome trails. I'm in West Cobb/Atlanta, but I will most definitely be heading out here again.

Rode this weekend after Irma came through. There are a few large trees down, blocking the trail. For sure one on Oval Office, but can't remember the locations of the others.

Tons of huge acorns down as well right now, which can make some of the corners... interesting.

I stopped at the Anniston trail head to Coldwater Mountain for a quick (1 hr) ride while on a trip. I would have liked to have explored more but lacked time. It's a well built, well designed single track trail. They seemed to be aiming for flow which they come close to achieving. The part I rode had longer climbs than I would associate with flowy. There was nothing especially long, but you weren't sprinting up. It was somewhat rocky, but not to the point I would describe it as technical. You feel pretty removed from civilization except for some distant highway noise. It is beautiful and there was hardly anyone on the trail at mid-day during the week. I liked the trail but found the signage lacking. There are signs, but they need more and better located. There also seem to be trails that are off the map. I had downloaded the GPX into my phone. On part of the trail I had diverged from the tracks. Nothing bad about this except there were sections I wanted to get to that I had a hard time finding. Bottom line: if you are in the area you should definitely ride this trail. From the limited sections I rode, I can't recommend you go to great effort (far out of your way) to ride this trail. To be clear, I'm not saying you shouldn't, just that I didn't see enough of it to make that recommendation.

awesome trails, especially for more enduro style riding (climb a lot, then descend a lot) but be warned, during the summer, all of the rocks turn the trails into an oven

For the most part was fun like most reviews shows how ever riding in the middle of July the heat was tough but the overgrown of plants and brush was even worse. I has to turn around mutiple times to find the trail for gaza. I'll come back in the fall.

I love this place! I always enjoy riding here. The soil was in epic condition. Only complaint was it was a bit overgrown in spots and had quite a few trees down.

It is a little old school as for the most part you are either going straight up or straight down. The climbs keep you honest and make you earn the crazy awesome downhills.

The rocks scare less experienced riders and can make it tough for intermediate and newer riders to go up or down on. Oval Office, Goldilocks, and Bomb Dog, are all gnarly down hills with jumps and a ton of baby heads. Baby Bear, Momma Bear, Trillium, Hare, and Bunny are smoother, more buff down hills.

This is a great & challenging trail system. When I reflect on my 20 mile ride the words that come to mind are: climbs (gradual, but long and sustained), rock (chunder in this case), and, most importantly, epic downhill. NB: This is not a place I would take a beginner (especially when Oak Mtn is only 1 hr away). Started at the Anniston trail head. Plenty of options to start the climb from "easy" to "more difficult". Took Tortoise up the mountain to Power Trip and then took the Oval Office loop which is where I learned what chunder is. Some decent downhill with a number of bumps. From there I took Chilhowee all the way across the mountain to Bull Frog and Rock Slot. Lots of climbing intermixed with some cool descents... all with rocks to keep you on your toes. Next was Bomb Dog and it was epic! Incredible downhill fun with plenty of opportunity for speed and air. The downhill just seemed to go on and on and may well have been the most fun I've ever had on a mountain bike. Climbed back up to Baby Bear and took a short break at the Coldwater trail head. Headed down Momma Bear, to Papa Bear to Cassidy. Each has plenty of elevation change. At the next trail intersection I took Goldilocks by mistake (wrong direction) and found myself further away from the Anniston trail head. Having ridden 18m in 90 degree heat without water I decided to bike the 2 miles back to the Coldwater trail head and ride the 6 miles back to the Anniston trail head by road. Overall an incredible trail system that is worth the journey. So glad I went. Check out the NEABA website for trail conditions and detailed descriptions of each trail. I found this very helpful.
